Over two years! The reasons for the farwell are simple.
Starfish and Nadia have both been globetrotting, and Nadia hasn't been near a computer, or a cell phone for that matter, in over six months. Nadia has been on a mission to Africa to help starving children along the Ndongo river. She was named a local hero when she saved a sacred artifact from being swept away in the Ndongo river. She is now a member of the community's council and she plans on returning to the U.S. in 2010 with her six children and her husband, tribal chief Nkosana.
Starfish however, has gone to over 7 countries as a rock journalist and has traveled with her band on its national tours, and went on her first pilgrimage to the Holy Land.Anyway, after getting multiple tattoos after each of her U.S. tours and several ear and eyebrow piercings later, she currently resides---for this week that is--- in a little shack on Venice Beach in California. With her boyfriend Spider. Don't ask me why he is called Spider. I'm too afraid to ask! :)

But for me, I'm here and there. Everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Malaysia is pretty nice, until the monsoon comes and then I'm off to Zanzibar... To meet the Zanzibarbarians! I'm still the same... and yet different. Until we meet again, this is the Aunt signing off. The past two days I've been super excited and riding this high. But I feel it already subsiding and I dont want that to happen again. I get really depressed over the winter and I dont want that to happen again. I realize that and I acknowledge that but the thing is, I feel like in the last two days I've needed attention so badly, and that I'm doing things falling into the same things that I've done before to fit in. I know its not right, and I want to know if you have any advice on how to be myself and stay myself and not change to make people laugh or like "me." SO what can I do? How can I stay true to myself?

"When the winter months and the holidays start to come, people naturally start to feel stress. With the holidays, it's a time for families and gatherings, and a lot of times that means stress to people. For example, if you've lost weight, and you've worked on losing weight all summer, and you know the holidays are around the corner, just thinking about it tends to frighten people that they will slip back into there old habits. The sun doesn't shine as much, and there's more rain and snow keeping you inside and so you feel more depressed. This is the time that you should listen to positive music--no 50 Cent! The Rascals are very upbeat.

For attention you need to surround yourself with people who share your interests--how about ballroom dance lessons? Don't laugh! You are tall so you would be great at it. I recommend that you watch Shall We Dance with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. The character in there is has a great life, but he feels guilty for wanting something more.

According to Super Nanny Jojo, when you are feeling neglected, you need to go to your parents and say, "I'm not getting enough attention! Can you focus on me for awhile?" If you don't tell them, how will they know? Try to give them a chance.

As a mother, I would want my children to come to me, for whatever is bothering them so that I can help fix it.

You have to have self-confidence; you have to believe in yourself before you can expect others to. Who says you have to fit in? You need to learn to be a leader instead of a follower! You have to replace a negative habit (like smoking, etc.) with a good habit (like running when you wanted to smoke, or reading). Gradually the new habit will replace the old one. If your habit is falling into a depression during winter, you need to make a conscious effort to recognize when it happens, and change the behaviors. If your pattern is to please others but compromise yourself, same thing.

Look in the mirror everyday and say, " I love myself. I am worth it. I was created in His image, and I am loved." And be happy:)

--The Mother"

The Mother Is In

message for the mother,

hyia mother. It's anonymous...not the same one as before, a different anonymous but still anonymous. I'm starting to feel sad, but not depressed just sad. It hasn't been the greatest summer, or past few years really. I just finished high school and in the past 4 years I haven't made any life long friends, I don't have a social life but I'm still friendly with people so I'm not exactly an outcast. Its like I have friends at school but they're all part of tight knit cliques that won't open up to anyone.
Aside from that, this summer hasn't been the greatest. My dad took off and isn't living with us anymore, he lives with his mother. He won't support my mother or I aside from the $300 or so that hes given us in the past 2 months. My mom works part time in a store and thats not enough to even buy groceries, we had to go to the food bank two days ago and the cheesebread was growing mould.
We used to live in a huge house that my mom bought when I was born, but my dad managed to get us evicted after 16 years (the week after my 16th birthday actually, it prevented me from taking my birthday trip to Flordia). My mom and I constantly face the fear of eviction from the townhouse we now live in, we've had our gas turned off and we even spent a month with our hydro cut off (because it was winter, it was on for 2 hour intervels every four hours or so, but it was very inconvient).
My dad hardly ever talks to us and won't answer the phone at his mothers house because apparently theres a 'code' that they use so he doesn't have to talk to us. All summer I've spent inside the house, i've been out three times in which I saw two movies and one show. The only thing I wanted to do this summer was go to this really big Exhibition thats held in my area every year, i've been looking forward to it all summer long and my dad called tonight at 12:45 am to tell me that I can't go because he can't get any money.
He quit his job and won't support us, and we can't easily support ourselves because jobs are extremely difficult to find in this area....and on top of this there isn't anyone I can talk to because I have no friends and I'm starting to be scared that I'll turn into a social intervert or somthing. Until recently having no friends and living in poverty hasn't crushed my spirits, I've never looked at myself as a loser and I still don't for the most part. I'm sad because I've lost what should have been the happiest years of my life. I'm not sure how writing this will help...but since I have nobody to talk too I thought I'd be easier to open up to a stranger. Thanks.

"I'm glad you found the courage to talk about your situation. My heart goes out to you because I believe it's unfair to put children, regardless of age, through adult situations. It sounds like you might be feeling responsible for what is happening—you can’t control the situation, so you feel helpless; it causes you to question your own strengths and abilities.

In my own experience, I had lots of friends in high school; my best friends came and went, we kept in touch, but I learned not to base who I was, my self-worth, on how many friends I had. The truth of the matter is, it is very rare to make lasting friendships in high school; if you do, so much the better, but there is nothing wrong if you don’t. As you get older it’s inevitable you will meet people with the same interests as you—for example, if you are interested in music, or a particular sport, dance, computers, art, etc., you need to look for friends outside of the high school bubble. You have graduated, so now your life is just beginning. It’s a scary thought…but every body goes through it.
As for your father, I’ve known people that, when they feel like they are backed into a corner, the easiest thing for them to do is run, men especially. They tend to think and act as if the problem doesn’t exist—if they ignore it, it will go away. That’s how men usually deal with things. I haven’t known too many mothers to run away from their children.
I know that many cities have resources for situations like this. Your local churches are usually willing to help till your mother gets on her feet again. The important thing for you now is to focus on your future; you may need to get a part time job, if you don’t already have one, and you need to get yourself into college. You can rise above your situation, and education is the key.
I believe that we go through situations in our life that make us stronger; in the future you look back on the hard times and think if I can get through that, I get through anything else that comes.
It seems to me that when you keep calling your father it’s empowering him to have control over your situation—he has the upper hand. He may have his reasons for what he’s doing, but it should be kept between your parents, not you. I can’t imagine a parent treating their child like that. That’s just wrong, you have done nothing to deserve the treatment he is giving you. He doesn’t want to own up to his responsibilities as a father.
You need to get out of the house, get involved in church youth groups, or the community theater, and surround yourself with positive people. Libraries are a great resource, especially the main branches--there are all sorts of programs you can get involved with...knowledge is power.

YOU ARE NOT A LOSER! It sounds like you’re a good person, with good morals and values; so don’t think negatively about yourself. As adults, we tend to look back and regret things we did or didn’t do, but we can’t change the past—we can only change the future. Dr. Phil says that you can’t change what you don’t acknowledge, and I think you have the courage and the drive to change your situation. You just need some direction.

I’m providing you with some links that you might be interested in checking out; they might help you. Also, you might like to read Family Matters, Self Matters, and Life Strategies For Teens, by Phil McGraw and Jay McGraw, respectively. These are great books with concrete advice. There is a song called “Back Against the Wall” by BJ Thomas that I listen to all the time—he says don’t you ever get your back against the wall, because he went through a lot when he was younger.

We are always here if you need someone to talk to. This is only my opinion…I wish you all the best.

Signed, The Mother.”

Disney Careers--General Information

Disney Careers--Student Programs

Expedition: Everest Update

The construction of the new Animal Kingdom ride, Expedition: Everest, is going smoothly and in recent months, the tip of the mountain has been added and so has the exterior paint. According to an Animal Kingdom representative, the new ride will include upside-down loops, the trains chased by a Yeti, and the track will go in and out of the mountain structure. Construction is underway in the Asia section of the park to add a themed Himalayan town surrounding the ride. Capturing the general essence of Disney magic, the Animal Kingdom family will surely love this new addition set to open in 2006.

Local Music Review: Three-Cord Band

In our ongoing quest to support local music, Nadia and I would like to introduce a band that catches our eyes and our ears from the Orlando area.

We met the members of a Christian music band called Three-Cord at a Celebration area Chick-Fil-A during a promotion for Chick-Fil-A’s new coffees and cinnamon bun clusters (which were divine… but that’s beside the point).

We sat in the back of the restaurant eating our lunch and the band came in rather quietly, and we didn’t realize they were the band until they brought their instruments in and set up on the other side of the restaurant; they just looked like regular hungry customers to us. The band consisted of two brothers and a friend: Anthony, playing acoustic guitar; his brother Jonathan, playing a large percussion tribal-looking drum, and various other percussion instruments; and the bass guitarist, whose name I can’t remember for the life of me…

Their music didn’t carry well across the restaurant and we strained our ears to hear them, but we clapped anyway. And we were the only ones. You gotta support your peeps, you know? On their first break Anthony came over and introduced himself, in his words, to “the cheering section”. And Mother told him we were deciding if we should sit on the other side of the restaurant because we were cold, and he asked for us to come over, because there were only about ten people inside. It seemed like the other six people in the restaurant were afraid to sit closer, which is not unusual in that small of a setting.

After we moved the band was getting into their groove a bit, making jokes to each other and to the audience¾us, I mean. Their melodies were somewhat acoustic coffeehouse style, and their vocal style was somewhat Matchbox Twenty-esque. It’s kind of hard to put a particular style of music to this great local band because their sound was unique, and they weren’t trying to be anyone but themselves. In between songs (and sometimes in the middle of them) Jonathan would shove entire cinnamon bun clusters into his mouth and tried to look innocent about it¾that cracked us up every time. Anthony, his older brother, would say jokingly to his brother, “Dork, stop that,” and other brotherly comments would fly back and forth between them. The bass guy was the quietest, hardly said a word and sat on top of his amp, which was next to the swinging kitchen door, so when it opened he usually got banged on the elbow. And sometimes, he sat a song or two out and talked to Anthony’s wife and had more of those cinnamon bun clusters.

“Are you going to come and play with us now?” Anthony called over to him in the next booth. Sometimes, his jokes were just as good as the songs. After the last set, we clapped and cheered, and the band got up and started to pick up their instruments. Then Anthony said, “Does anyone want to see me embarrass myself?” Let me tell you, that got the loudest cheer of all. So he picked up his guitar and strummed a few chords. His brother obviously knew what he was about to do, so he borrowed the bass. Anthony broke into a commercial-type jingle the band wrote about Dr. Pepper that was totally unexpected. If Three-Cord sent in a demo tape of that song, I know the Dr. Pepper Company would pick it up.

Between songs about “Bush Drivers” and first-ever autographs from our “peeps”, the cinnamon clusters didn’t measure up to the good time we had with this band and their music (although Nadia loved the new coffees—she downed three large cups!). All in all, it was an afternoon well spent, and we bet these guys will become favorites of Orlando.

Three-Cord Band plays locally in the Celebration and Orlando area, appearing on various dates at Sherlock’s Tea Room in downtown Celebration and other venues.

Mother Speaks

Mario said...
Ok, I have a question. They offer many plan options—coast-to-coast walkie-talkies with other Nextel customers, inventory scanners for businesses, and they are linked with both Nascar and Disney.
For Pay-As-You-Go, stay away from Virgin, it’s a rip-off—you might try Cingular or T-Mobile.”

David said…
Hi! I came across your blog and I see that you've recently moved to
Orlando…I have heard mixed comments about living in the Orlando area (either you love it or you hate it) and I was curious as to what you thought of that area, Disney World aside.

“Orlando is very liberal; where I’m from originally, they are very conservative. As far as the job market is concerned, there are a ton of options that are available to you in the base salary ranges. The entertainment is great—it’s a great place for the arts community. It’s also very densely populated. You find a lot of friendly, working class people here, and a great deal of them speaks Spanish, and they’ll tell it like it is in both languages! There is also good high end shopping—Neiman Marcus, Tiffany’s etc. From December through April the weather is great, but the rest of the year there are storms every day. If I had to rate the quality of living, I would give the Disney area a 10, and the rest of the city a 6.”

Mario said...
I have one, why can’t i phrase the words? why do i fear confrontation? why cant i just say what’s on my mind? why do i feel that i must appease everyone? i don’t want to be a politician, i want to be a person. why cant i just say what i feel and not think before i speak? why must i respect everyone's feelings and give up my own? why cant i be real? why am i so fake?

“Let’s take this one by one:

--You fear confrontation because you fear rejection; Dr. Phil said our number one need is acceptance, and our number one fear is rejection. Confrontational situations force you to stand up for yourself, and you have to have the self-esteem to support that. If you don’t, you will not be in control of the situation, and thus you open yourself to the possibility of criticism.

--You can’t say what’s on your mind because you do not want to be judged. Everyone wears a social mask, and when you say what’s on your mind, you are dropping your social mask and letting people see the real you.

--All parents expect their children to act, dress, think, and be a certain way according to the values they have instilled in you. As you grow up it is normal to reach the limits of these presets; when you do, you feel restricted, like you can’t be your own person because of the expectations that others have of you. You feel that you have to appease people and act the way they expect you to even though it sometimes conflicts with what you want to do.

--You have been raised to act a certain way socially, and that comes from your parents; it is usually better to think before you speak, but not at the expense of sincerity. You should be honest with people, as long as you are aware of the fine line that can be crossed, causing you to hurt the people you love.

--It is important to respect other’s feelings; however, no one says you have to give up your own. Compromising your own feelings is a choice you make. There is a definite middle ground here, in dealing with others, and it is difficult to find that balance sometimes.

--You have to learn to accept who you are before you can be genuine around others. In trying to be more real, you take in all these ideas and opinions and influences from outside sources and medias in order to fill in the blank spaces, but strangely enough it makes you feel more empty, and more unreal, because these internalizations are not truly your own.

Dr. Phil says, “My position is, let the rest of the people live in a fog of self-deception. You take off the blinders and deal with the truth and you’ll leave them all in the dust.” I highly suggest you read his son Jay McGraw’s book Life Strategies for Teens. My kids and I have read the books and found them immensely helpful in dealing with life’s situations.”

Nadia’s Note: Please remember that all the opinions expressed in the preceding paragraphs are just that—opinions.

Disney Park Update—MGM Studios adds Extra Magic

When we went to MGM for the Extra Magic Hours last Sunday, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.

The first thing we noticed walking up to the gates around 9pm were the curiously good smells, like hors d’oeuvres and finger foods--smells that are pretty much synonymous with the word “party”.

The second thing we noticed was the thumping bass beat. We started dancing in line before even realizing it was out of place.

So up Hollywood Boulevard we go to try to track down the source of all these curious happenings, and possibly crash whatever private event we assumed they were having.

Well, lo and behold, right there, on a stage set up smack dab in front of that big old annoying hat (Can’t tell what we think of that, now can you? We’re very subtle)—right in front of it was a DJ, all set up with his discs and mix tables and a pile of shiny stuff on the floor.

We were still looking for the party.

Took us a minute to realize that this was the party, and better yet, it was for us…and all the other resort guests. In a word (pay attention here, this is the whole point of the article…actually I could have just said this in the beginning but that’s way too easy)—in an effort to liven up their late nights, which up until now have been rather dull, Disney has added a DJ in the hopes that it will help bring in more guests.

Frankly, I’ve wondered about this—how much does it actually cost to keep the park open the extra three hours? If only a handful guests show up to take advantage this resort guest perk, will they in turn spend enough on food and merchandise in those three hours to justify the Extra Magic to continue? It makes sense that Disney would try to up the attendance, and a DJ is a great idea.

Although it wasn’t quite like New Year’s at MGM—all the tunes were decidedly family-friendly—it didn’t matter much, because people like to dance. The playlist for the night included the obligatory dance songs—YMCA, the Electric Slide, etc.—along with Disney remixes and a bunch of pop tunes with a good beat.

The DJ, though, didn’t just play the tunes and leaving the crowd to fend for itself—he threw out Mardi Gras beads at random intervals, dug through his pile of costumes for wigs and sequined jackets, among other things --and he made sure that we all kept moving by leading us in funky routines that had us jumping and kickboxing, doing the grapevine and disco, and a whole slew of other moves I’m sure he invented on the spot to throw us off (i.e. “the sprinkler”?). Not that we and the other two hundred people cared—we were just having fun. We did the limbo, the cha-cha, the hula-hoop, washed an invisible car, mowed an invisible lawn, and much, much more.

Three hours later, we were sweaty and tired, but in a good way, like we’d just been through a workout…my running theory is that that was part of the idea—to trick our fast food nation into exercising.

A more probable motivation was that thirsty dancers buy more drinks.

Whatever the reason, it was a fun night (even though we never discovered the source of the good smells…?) and I hope the change in the Magic Hours is permanent because hey, who doesn’t like to do the “John Travolta” all night long?

Ask My Mother

I would like to introduce a new feature that dear old Starfish and I are trying out—a little weekly or bi-monthly (or basically whenever) thing called Ask My Mother. The reason behind this being, after reading our humble collection of articles, my mother, as usual, wants to get involved in all the fun—so here’s how it’s going to work: anyone is welcome to ask her a question on any topic, she’ll answer them, and we’ll post the answers. You can post your question as a comment on this post, or email them to Starfish or me, whichever you prefer.
The only thing we ask regarding the questions is that you please avoid vulgar language and topics; otherwise, there’s no limit—advice, fortunes, information, opinion, anything you can think of. Trust me, the answers will almost certainly be interesting—you don’t know my mother:)

My Mother’s Biography (the short version; all the good stuff is not fit to print)

Name: My Mother
Birthday: August 22, 19something—it changes every year.
Place of Birth: The scalding, barren deserts of Arizona, somewhere between a couple of cacti and a tumbleweed.
Favorite food: Mexican food and sushi.
Favorite movies: Seems Like Old Times, The Goodbye Girl, and Overboard.
Favorite time and place: Williamsburg, Virginia, in the fall.
Favorite Singer/Song/Type of Music: When I asked her this, she named off a whole bunch of things and couldn’t decide on one…

Fun facts:
She is a former cheerleader.
She loves chocolate.
She likes Los Lonely Boys.
She is a licensed hairdresser.
She watches Days of our Lives, The Bounty Hunter, Knievel’s Wild Ride, and Growing Up Gotti.
She thinks it’s funny when I say that when some people play DDR ,it's like watching Riverdance on crack.
She puts on her shoes in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.

She LOVES Nascar.

She thinks Michael Jackson should have stopped at Thriller; her brother thought he was John Lennon; and she is appalled that I am posting all this:)

The Flower Power 2005 Band Awards, Part 2

The Nelsons—Best Power Stances and Most Rabid Fans. Power Stances is pretty self-explanatory—they knew how to look fabulous while singing and playing a ’59 Les Paul. And they were the only people whose music was popular while I was alive. But, whoa, the fans. More specifically, the Street Teamers. They are vicious, my friend, they go to every concert and shove you out of the way without a thought. Be Afraid. The music is worth going to see them, just wear protective gear. In spite of this, the boys are very gracious, and a credit to their dad’s legacy.

Gary Puckett—Best A Capella Harmony, and Closest Elvis Connection. It’s funny, this guy moves like a lounge singer and he wears lounge singer-esque tropic print shirts, but he sounds like Elvis, I swear. He called his band together for one song and their harmony, sans music, was tight, man. And then he told his Elvis story, which basically condenses to them both performing in the same venue, he met Elvis getting onto an elevator, Elvis came to his show later that night and said, “That boy can sang.” So I figure that’s as close to Elvis as I’ll ever get:)

Orleans—Most Onstage Instrument Changes. They kept swapping, this for that, my guitar for your bass, a funky mini keyboard thing that you played with your mouth, and so forth. It was a good show, just not as eventful as some of the others.

Rare Earth—Most, umm, Indefinable. Are they metal or Motown or what? We couldn’t tell. The show was fun anyway; they did “Get Ready” (the short version, the real length is about 20 minutes), and in the middle, the bass player, this old guy with wild eyes and long grey hair, did a great bass solo. Now, bass solos are hard to come by (because guitarists usually get all the glory:) and good ones even more so. We really liked seeing—and hearing--that.

B.J. Thomas—My Mother’s Favorite. This guy has so many songs, it’s not funny. He could sing all of them and still not be through in a week. My favorite things he said were, “How ‘bout my band, y’all”, cause he said it at least three times a show and I thought it was funny; and “The young people in the audience probably think I’m Mr. Hokey,” which was also funny, even though we were just about the youngest ones there and I didn’t think he was hokey. I guess you had to be there. We heard “Raindrops” about six times, and did you know he did the theme song to Growing Pains? I didn’t. Oh, and he would start a song, fudge a little on the words he had forgotten, talk in the middle of it, and say he wished he hadn’t started the song in the first place. It was great:)

Eric Burdon and the Animals—Loudest. Definitely the Loudest. I don’t know if the setup was wrong, or it was the fault of those weird turning speaker things, or if they were just loud, but their show was the only one I wished I’d brought earplugs to. I like “House of the Rising Sun,” it’s a classic, but I think I’d rather listen to it a little less painfully. The keyboardist, though, was nice—he liked to wave from the stage. And he played the violin, which was an interesting contrast to his long hair/grunge metal look.

Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals—Best Use of an Organ. Now, a lot of the bands used an organ—I guess it was a sixties thing, since the keyboard wasn’t invented yet—but this guy made it sound great, and you could tell he loved to play it. “Good Lovin’” was my favorite song, but the Rascals also do “It’s a Beautiful Morning” (which reminds me of breakfast cereal) and “Groovin’”, among others. The guitarist used a Telecaster, for that nice crunchy sound, a la Los Lonely Boys, and was the only one at Flower Power who did; and Felix Cavaliere is a great stage performer—friendly, energetic, comedic, and good to his Rascals. We really enjoyed the shows—and if we had to pick favorites, these guys would be up there on our list.

Arlo Guthrie—Best Stories. Most of his songs were stories, so yeah, they were funny ones—about pickles and Joseph and restaurants and other things like that, all told to guitar tunes and lasting anywhere from 5 to 18 minutes apiece. He could play the guitar, sing the story, and play the harmonica at the same time—talented, isn’t he? Also appearing were his daughter, Sarah Lee, and son-in-law, and various other family members who waltzed in to sing something or other at various times. We loved to hear Sarah Lee talk—“Sure, Pop, just let me switch to this other guitar” ; in the middle of a song, “Pop, are you in G?” all in this sweet little country voice which, if she weren’t so sincere, would be funny.

All in all, it was good end to a great run of shows. We had so much fun running through Epcot (late as always!) every other day or so for two straight months, it was crazy. I would love to do this again next year; in the meantime, there is the Food and Wine Festival concert series, Eat to the Beat, to look forward to; and if I start to miss the music, I can always pop in a hits of the sixties CD.

Until next time;)

The Flower Power 2005 Band Awards, Part 1

Welcome people to the first annual Flower Power Band Awards, sponsored by Johnson&Johnson and the College of William& Mary. Actually there are no sponsors (big surprise there!) but in the off chance you would like to be one, please see the sidebar.

Well, we hope it will be annual. If we don't get to go to the Flower and Garden Festival next year, then this will be a one-time show.

Note: These awards are not given out in any scientific or otherwise orderly manner. Meaning we get to give whoever we want whatever we want. Capiche?

And the winners are...

Davy Jones-- Best Accent. Who doesn't like to hear a British dude talk? Plus, you can't help but sing along to songs like "Daydream Believer" and "I'm a Believer" (are there any believers in the house?) without feeling semi-nostalgic.

Gary U.S. Bonds-- Most Energetic Old Guy. We don't know what the U.S. stands for, but he has both ears pierced and that was certainly a redeeming quality. He was just so nice, too!

Paul Revere and the Raiders-- Best Costumes and Best Dance Moves. Actually, they were the only ones who wore costumes, and they looked more like pirates than patriots. Still, anyone who can play their instrument, sing in tune, AND keep up with the dance routine has my vote.

The Buckinghams-- Best Stage Effect and Most Photogenic. The drummer had this portable fan that attached to his drumset. For the entire show his long curly hair flew up from his face in a sort of rock god halo that was just plain cool. And then there was Bob, the guitarist... Well, there are so many things to say about Bob, but for brevity's sake, I shall limit my comments to just... one... thing... The fact that this guy not only takes good pictures, but doesn't mind posing for them through such problems as popped guitar strings, lost picks, and unplugged amps. Now that's dedication.

The Grass Roots-- Best Shoes. Or should I say, Best Boots. Jacques, as in strap, also known as Chris ( his words, not mine) wore these black and white snakeskin cowboy boots on stage. He said they hurt his feet but he wore them because they looked cool. And they really did.

The Turtles—Wildest Hair. We actually couldn’t figure who was Flo and who was Eddie (they both looked permanently stoned—one of those lasting effects from the sixties, I guess) but one of them had the biggest natural faux Afro I’ve ever seen. Plus, he looked a little like Ozzy. They did a 2-minute tour through music history that was pretty funny, ending with a rendition and imitation of the real Slim Shady. We say, pretty fly for some white guys.

Gregg Rolie Band—Best Overall Band Dynamics, and Best Guitarist Hair Toss. First of all, these guys can play. The keyboardist did the most amazing onstage improve I’ve ever seen. Even the band was impressed. The music was just incredible. The band members each fed off each other’s cues like it was the most natural thing in the world. The percussionists, all three of them, were spectacular, and the guitarist not only played his music to technical and stylistic perfection, but also demonstrated his mastery of the Hair Toss. Mucho impressive, no?

The Lovin’ Spoonful—Most Bored Guitarist, and Only Band to Rock Out with an Autoharp. The poor guitarist (who resembled Viggo Mortenson) spent the whole time playing rhythm and staring off into the crowd. Not that we don’t love “Do You Believe in Magic” and “Summer in the City” (even with an autoharp) but I do wish they had given him a few face-melting solos. I mean, he was from Arkansas—he gets props for that alone.

Stay tuned for part 2...
